Immagini dal Sud del Mondo
Since its foundation in 1986, the non-profit Associazione Universitaria per la Cooperazione e lo Sviluppo Onlus (AUCS) has been active in international cooperation and rural development. It counts on the support of professionals with extensive experience in social anthropology and cooperation, audiovisual and photographic production, as well as agricultural training. This eclectic mix of skills has led the association to focus its efforts in a communication channel - cinema - which has always had the ability to offer a fresh viewpoint on sometimes delicate issues. The basic idea of the project is to screen short videos and films by directors from all over the world with the aim of showing their country’s social, economic and cultural life without the filter of our prejudices.
The primary objective of the festival is to gain the audience’s attention, while at the same time developing their critical awareness of the cultural, geographical and political reality in distant places. This is accomplished by showing films from Africa, Asia and South America, or by Italian and European directors, including independent productions. The result is that, besides opening windows on whole worlds of images and directors that are often overlooked by the major distributors, AUCS still succeeds in surprising the viewer by means of a timeless medium - cinema - establishing a relationship of empathy with faraway situations which suddenly appear very close to us.
This is remarkable these days, when we have the whole world just a click away but hardly the curiosity or the motivation to venture beyond our social media. “We’re keen to provide content which can make “Immagini dal Sud del Mondo” unique. Passion, tenacity and a specific attention to the search for aesthetics accompany and distinguish our work”.
