HABITAS

A wonderful and arduous task, born of an artistic “love at first sight”.This is the definition of Niccolò Matcovich, who founded the Habitas company in 2016, together with Livia Antonelli and Chiara Aquaro. It was the sum of their respective experience - very different, yet sharing a common passion - that gave rise to this independent young theatre company, which is already establishing a recognizable voice on the Italian scene: an ever-moving reality whose starting point is the idea of sharing the artistic process in which all - actors, technicians, authors and even spectators - can take part. It is not by chance that Habitas is based at Ex 51 in Rome’s Valle Aurelia, a shared artists’ space and a place where you can come acrosspeople from many different creative walks of life and where, if you wish, you can watch how the work of a theatre company begins and takes shape.

The company’s aim is to establish a traditional-style theatre that uses contemporary artistic languages in a narrative format accessible to all, but without limiting artistic research and experimentation. It’s a bold and resolute endeavour which seeks to demonstrate that theatre is an occupation and not just a hobby, and that one can make a living doing it. Niccolò, Livia and Chiara are well aware that creativity does not end on the stage but spills over into other areas, into close collaboration with performers, into the ever-new marketing strategies they use daily in their efforts to widen the field by offering an experience of theatre that’s enjoyable and - as they themselves define it - pop-ular; that can persuade even non-theatre-goers to give their attention to a form of communication which marries tradition with innovation, giving results that are engaging and delightful.

The story has been written by Valentina D’Urbano, writer.
