Artecarta is an art laboratory where Carmen Rodríguez has made paper work her work for years. After graduating in Cuban language, Carmen attended the Taller experimental del Papel (Experimental Paper Laboratory) and it is here that year after year she deepens her knowledge of the techniques of creating paper objects. Her arrival in Italy took place in 1994, the year in which she decided to devote herself to learning the art of classical and modern bookbinding, first in Florence at the Abacus workshop of Maestro Raffaele De Dominicis where she learned the techniques of binding leather and marbled paper. Later she attended the laboratory of Maestro Angelo Colombo in Genoa and it is precisely here that she further deepens her knowledge of the techniques of cartonnage.
In 2005 Carmen started her own business by opening her own Artecarta Craft Workshop in the center of Rome: here she handmade produces photo albums, frames, notebooks, boxes and other furnishing accessories with direct sale to the public. The first paper jewels have been made in these years, applying all the knowledge of paper processing on them. The transfer to Sezze, in the province of Latina, took place in 2007 where Carmen still carries out her professional activity and life. Paper jewels were born as a natural consequence of several years of work in the field of artisan bookbinding: from these first experiments the jewels were perfected to create a line of bijoux with paper components, the same natural and printed themed papers with which until then the bookbinding creations had been made.
