Villa Torlonia | the Mussolini bunker opens again to the public

In the subsoil of Villa Torlonia, in the heart of the capital, there is an anti-aircraft shelter and an antigas shelter under the Fucino lake; an air-raid shelter and reinforced antigas, under the Casino Nobile; a real bunker, composed of two cylindrical structures placed in a cross, remained unfinished. Bunker refers to a structure with thick reinforced concrete walls, high-armored doors, to resist for a prolonged time not only to an air attack but also to one from the ground. The peculiarity of the bunkers of Villa Torlonia, undoubtedly definable such with its 6 meters of reinforced concrete, is due to its very limited dimensions, which certainly could not guarantee long stays, if not for the storage of material, supplies, etc.

Thanks to the restoration and installation work carried out by the Roma Sotterranea Association, awarded the public call for proposals announced in August 2017, following which the convention for the joint management of the Villa Ada-Savoia bunkers was signed with the Superintendency of the Capitoline of Villa Torlonia for the next three years, the two air raid shelters were set up by inserting some original pieces of the era, while in the actual bunker an outfitting was created that will allow to relive an "Air Raid Experience". The 3 rooms dedicated to paneling have been set up by focusing on images, with reproductions of original documents of the time including newspapers, propaganda posters, flyers.

A film, made by the historical documentarist Fabio Toncelli, reconstructs instead the plan, not completed, of the Royal Air Force, to eliminate Mussolini, bombarding at the same time Villa Torlonia and Palazzo Venezia. Inside the bunker, in addition to guided tours, there will also be theater performances of historical re-enactment and educational activities with other associations.
