A roof for everyone
Launched in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation as a contribution to the homeless, the World Habitat Awards are given each year to two projects that present the best solutions to the housing problems of our times. Works created with an eye on innovation and sustainability, but not only: they must be works that are in progress or completed (and, therefore, not in the planning phase) and so versatile that they can be built in any country in the world. In addition, every project must be able to create further benefits for the different communities where they will be located: to generate income, water or energy resources, or benefits for health or the development of education.
The competition phases
A committee of experts will select the first 12 projects. The shortlisted works will be assessed by a group of independent consultants who will carry out inspections on site. To take part in the first phase it is necessary to produce a short description of the project's key aspects accompanied by images: complete plans are not necessary, nor are calculations of costs or various evaluations, although these kinds of information may also be given, if desired. Projects may be presented in English, Spanish or French. At stake, for the top entries, a prize of £10,000 each.
