An Opera for the Castle 2018 | VII edition of the competition for artists between 21 and 36 years

The national competition "Opera for the Castle", dedicated to young artists, for a project to be realized for the museum of Castel Sant'Elmo in Naples, is at its seventh edition.
The competition, organized by the Campania Museum Complex and Castel Sant'Elmo, is promoted by the Directorate General for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Suburbs of Mibact, within the CAP.

Recipients
Artists of Italian or foreign nationality who work permanently in Italy, between the ages of 21 and 36, may participate in the selection process. This requirement is intended to be completed on the expiration date of this Call and, in the case of groups of artists, is required for each individual member. Participants may have carried out their training related to the visual arts at Italian and foreign institutions and have exhibited preferably in a gallery, cultural center, foundation, public or private museum institution verifiable and recognized as such. Participants can join the competition with only one project, under penalty of exclusion.

Works admitted
The work or project submitted must be unpublished, under penalty of exclusion, commensurate with the specificity of the place and never exhibited or presented to other competitions. This year's theme is everyday Nature. Environment and sociality. Castel Sant'Elmo has a strong link with the natural and urban landscape and its organic but impregnable star shape, with the size that emerges from the tufaceous bank of the hill, confirms the undeniable and at the same time controversial relationship with the territory. This is the characteristic that makes it the privileged place to reflect on the concept of the environment, in an era in which sustainability - in terms of natural and social resources - seems to increasingly become a common ground on which to build our daily lives. The competition invites artists to present site-specific projects that reinterpret the context in the wake of the aforementioned themes, establishing an immediate dialogue with the complex architectural structure and its multiple audiences, capable of stimulating individual and collective sensitivity in reading the our time.

Awards
The aim of the competition is to select an artistic project for Castel Sant'Elmo that meets the above criteria without technical limitations, but compatible with the Castle's museum spaces and with the safety regulations, the realization of which involves the use of resources not more than 10 thousand euro gross, as total amount available for the prize and for the execution of the work. The activities directly linked to the competition also include the organization of a final exhibition event at Castel Sant'Elmo, where the winning artistic project will be presented and, consistent with the economic resources, an exhibition of the first ten selected projects. Together with the event, a catalog will be produced that documents the biographies of the selected finalists and their works. In addition, the finalist works will be published on the competition website.
