Rete degli spettatori
It's common knowledge that the old cinemas in the historic provincial town centres are now almost all closed. It was with this, and with a refusal to accept the situation, in mind that the Rete degli Spettatori association was born in Rome in 2011. Its members are Maurizio dell'Orso, Valerio Ialongo and Gianclaudio Lopez, and its mission is to bring back to town-centre cinemas quality Italian films which are struggling to find distribution, often accompanying the projections with talks by directors, actors, cinematographers, producers and writers.
In 2012 Rete degli Spettatori created Teniamoli d'occhio, 7 autori per 21 proiezioni (Keep An Eye on Them: 7 Directors for 21 Showings): a season – initially spread around the province of Rome and then across the whole Lazio region – whose characteristic is that of getting one Italian director to choose the programme for each cinema. The public are offered three films: one the director believes everyone should see, one that was particularly important for his or her development and one of his or her own. The public has the opportunity to get closer to actual filmmakers and discover their tastes and history and, just as importantly, the audience is given the opportunity to see Italian films – the small-scale ones that so often are victims of distribution problems and which therefore find it difficult to reach the general public. In 2014 Rete degli Spettatori screened films at the Sala Buonarroti in Civitavecchia, the Multiplex Politeama in Frascati, at the Filmstudio in Rome, the Multisala Moderno in Rieti, the Cinema Palma in Trevignano Romano and the Cinema Trento in Viterbo.
Dell'Orso has particularly fond memories of one especially exciting screening in Tolfa in 2012 - even though it was pouring with rain outside and there were not many people present, it was one of those unique, magical moments that sometimes happen at the most beautiful festivals. Dell'Orso hopes that the festival will become an ongoing event that can really help the cinemas in historical town centres to survive and Italian films to circulate.
The story of Associazione Rete degli spettatori has been written by Paola Soriga, writer.
