After completing the illustrators course at the IED (European Institute for Design) in Rome, the team spirit and reciprocal respect was so great that Andrea Mongia, Andrea Chronopoulos, Giulio Castagnaro and Giulia Tomai decided to work together at a coworking location. Studio Pilar was created as a result of this, a label for self-publishing and, since 2015, a cultural association. The group started off publishing illustrated fanzines with small circulation, while learning new skills and gaining experience. These qualities were then transferred into ever more complex and well-finished volumes, just like “Atlante Illustrato delle Nuove Costellazioni”. Among the more ambitious of these projects of this highly productive label is “Cocktails”. An anthological series of comic strips made up of four volumes, each with six stories by Italian and international authors. Pilar also organises exhibitions of illustrations by such artists as Gianluca Folì, Simone Rea, Claudia Palmarucci, Jim Pluk, Squame, Associazione Illustri, Bcomics and Inuit. And even workshops on drawing, graphics and artisan printing led by professionals in the sector such as Andrea Baldelli, Simone Rea, Gianluca Folì and Riccardo Falcinelli. To give a full picture of the work carried out behind the scenes, there are the launches of illustrated and comic books by artists such as Martoz, Squame, Associazione Illustri, Fulvio Risuleo and Le petit Neant. Inside the association’s office space there is also the small Pilar Bookshop, which offers illustrated and comic books and fanzine publications from across the world. So many big names, and so much excellence lies behind this publishing project. The Pilar mission is to spread the word about and increase the value of the language of illustrations and comics. The aim is to offer a broad overview of styles and contemporary illustrative and communication languages-
