An urban research and artistic experimentation lab in a public space. “Siti Lab - Social Innovazione Through Imagination” is driving forwards an investigation to critically examine the relationship between art and territory, the pragmatic and the political, through theoretical speculation and action. It operates in the field of urban studies, of training and of social innovation, with the aim of rethinking space in relational terms and imagining change through the active involvement of the community. One example is the Cap 04015 project, at Priverno, in the province of Latina. It’s a process that goes from the bottom up, starting from schools and the young, to gather the creative and transformational power of the area. Having listened to the memories, ambitions and dreams of the local people and having mapped the abandoned, vacant or underused locations in the town, they began to imagine a way to reopen and renew them. Backing up Siti there is a group of women of Priverno, some of them mothers. They are all returning migrants, connected by friendship and respect. They all come from different professional backgrounds - human sciences, architecture, engineering, design, communication - and they meet at the limits of their disciplines creating an acrobatic, yet playful balance. The idea was the result of Stefania Crobe’s research doctorate at the Department of Civil Engineering, Construction and Environment at Sapienza University of Rome. The research was an investigation into the relationship between artistic practices and social transformation, with particular attention for territorial and disciplinary margins. A starting point that has now grown catalysing the members’ energy to focus on making culture, sparking off change and overturning theidea of remoteness, which sticks in the minds of those who live awayfrom large cities, in small places in the countryside.
