Christmas in Greccio | The first living nativity scene of the history and the Christmas market

If you want to visit the first Nativity made in the world you have to visit Greccio. In fact, here in the Holy Valley of Rieti, back in 1223 St. Francis of Assisi, after a trip to Palestine, he did make a crib for the first time, organizing a living representation of the Nativity. A unique event in the world that combines a time of profound Christian faith in a show of lights and evocative music.

Still the 1, 6, 7 and 8 January at 5.30pm will be possible, from the large grandstands with more than 2000 seats and heated marquees, six tableaux that make up the Nativity, the life of the Franciscans in these reception areas by Pope Honorius III of the Rule written by Francis, the authorization given by the Holy Father for the realization of the crib until the day when Greccio became Bethlehem.

What makes this even more impressive Nativity are the places hosting it: the amphitheater which is located in the square in front of the Shrine of Greccio and unspoiled nature as a backdrop, with its oak and holm oak woods.

In addition to the Nativity which is the most important moment of the festivities, the village Rieti host throughout the Christmas period, "Craft Show and Market of decorative for the Nativity", an event that will conclude the celebrations of the millennium of Greccio, founded their own in 1016 by a Greek colony which reached this area after being exiled from their homeland. In the scenic route between the wooden houses, you can find the best local products, while children can visit the Santa Claus Village and enjoy the gastronomic specialties of the area, accompanied by the music of the bagpipers. There will also be guided tours of the historic center and the path of the artists, an open-air museum with 24 frescoes that adorn the exterior walls of the ancient houses. It will also be possible to admire the Museum of the Nativity, which welcomes different artistic expressions of the Nativity from all parts of Italy.
