Born in 1982, Matteo Rovere began his career as a filmmaker young. When he was still in high school, he made his first short film together with a group of friends, thanks to the financial support of Corto Lazio. Then, though still a novice, but with the chutzpah of his eighteen years and his passion for film, he gave up the classic 'end-of-high-school' holiday to work on a film set. He prefers experience in the field to the Centro Sperimentale. He worked his way up, but that's how he was able to immediately form an idea about the most honest type of film - the one created by craftsmanship, vision, a relationship with the crew and funding plans, not just auteur ambitions.

The first awards came with his fourth short film, Homo Homini Lupus, starring Filippo Timi, which won the Nastro d'Argento in 2007. After that, he was contacted by Colorado to film Un gioco da ragazze, which premiered at the International Festival of Rome in 2008, and later by Fandango to film Sandro Veronesi's novel Gli sfiorati. His third feature, Italian Race (scheduled for release in March 2016) about the world of Italian motorsports is what, in a sense, he considers his "first real film" – he is taking care of the screenplay himself, and it draws inspiration from a true story which is close to his heart. Among his future projects there is also a documentary about this world of speed, adrenaline and lives hanging constantly in the balance.

Alongside his career as a director, in 2005 Matteo founded a production company with his partner Andrea Paris: Ascent Film. Their goal is to prioritise the generation of thirty- and forty-year-olds and make room for films that can speak intelligently to a jaded public, even as regards comedies. So far they have successfully produced Smetto quando voglio by first-time director Sydney Sybilla, La foresta di ghiaccio by Claudio Noce, and The Pills and Zio Gianni for TV.
