Alice in Wonderland’s blonde locks among cups and biscuits. Sansa Stark sprinkled with powdered sugar next to a lemon cake. Mr. Smee asleep beside a Lost Boys Cake. Scenes from a thousand and one breakfasts. “The idea for the project came to me while I was surfing the internet. I had seen some images of tables set for a meal, accompanied by captions referencing famous books. That’s when I thought of adding the characters from the novels to the shots as well,” explains Marta Petrucci, the 34-year-old photographer behind “Dead Still Breakfast”. The photos that make up the story recall still life painting, but with people added: time is frozen, the objects are shown in great detail and the human figures presented as inanimate elements, head and arms lying motionless on the table. “I shot from above, drawing inspiration from images of crime scenes”. The stories were selected according to her personal tastes but also by the fact that “they described moments involving food”. Here is Alice in Wonderland “finding the cookies with the words: eat me”. Then Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones with the lemon cakes made by Queen Cersei. “Finally I photographed Mr. Smee with the poisoned cake Captain Hook ordered for Peter Pan and the Lost Boys”. In the photos, we notice not only the desserts, but the drinks as well, whether they actually appeared in the books or were selected with a little imagination: the tea for Alice, honey wine for Sansa, and a mojito for Mr. Smee. “The final goal is to create a real recipe book with photographs, for desserts and drinks inspired by literature. And it will probably even make someone want to read or reread a book”.

The story has been written by Serena Berardi, writer.
