“I’m not sure whether I’m first an editor, or a feminist”. Maria Iovine debuts with a dual identity. The truth is that this 34-year-old from Caserta has extremely clear views and enormous determination. The  same determination that got her a first-class degree in filmmaking at Salerno University with an experimental thesis, a true piece of montage that her professor had heartily advised against. Her tenacity also led her to win the video contest in the Lazio Region’s competition “Innovazione: sostantivo femminile”, which she entered at the very last minute before it closed. “A friend of mine sent me the link for the competition on the theme of women’s relationship with innovation”, Maria recalls, “but time was short to shoot a video. Then I realised there’s nobody better than an editor to exploit other people’s work”. The young woman began searching the internet for material out of copyright and put together the video “Favole in aggiornamento”, which lines up all the stereotypes girls grow up with, only to overturn them in the final. This clip is part of the wider project “Original Sin”, a series of videos on women’s issues, particularly gender violence and discrimination, released on a Creative Commons licence which allows free use. Maria’s latest work, “In her shoes”, is a 15-minute short film conceived for the 2017 Zavattini Prize for the creative reuse of film. Using material made available by the Archivio del Movimento Operaio and the Istituto Luce, she traces the story of feminism, but with the protagonists reversed. Domenico lives in a society dominated by women, in which he suffers continuous injustice, and gets involved in a men’s liberation movement to fight for equal opportunities.

The story has bee written by Serena Berardi, scrittrice.
