Landscape always wins, and its signs are the pretext for saying something about man, his movements in space and his place in the world.

When man wasn’t yet capable of modifying it, trees made up the landscape, filling it with natural monuments held to be sacred. We often forget that these very trees have a huge naturalistic value, they speak of the history of places that they live in just as much as churches, museums and cities. These are things that Aurelio and Mauro know all too well. They have both worked in the botanical and agro-technical sectors for years. Their project has the honourable aim of cataloguing, studying and defending  the Monumental Trees in the territory.

I knew nothing about monumental trees, so I asked Aurelio for some information. «A monumental tree is a tree that has a recognised, documented story. Before it was just a matter of age, but in 2013 the law was expanded, recognising also purely literary, religious, historical or cinematographic values to tree heritage » he tells me. «To give you an example: search for the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli (Hundred Horse Chestnut) on the internet. There, that is a monumental tree».

Monumentrees offers public administrations an essential help in certifying the nature of the trees’ monumentality, and records them in catalogues, thus contributing to making the value of the territory known to the public, by promoting their history. Using a specific application, every citizen can contribute to mapping the trees, so that thematic routes can be formed and can be also used by tourism.

The dream of Monumentrees is to defend monumental trees in Italy, taking care of them and trying to know them, filling the legislative vacuum and being at the services of institutions and of a law that, at least in intentions, will allow greater conservation of one of the greatest treasures of Italy: its landscape.

The story has been written by Matteo Trevisani, writer.
