The straw is a smooth and filiform grass that grows on the hills of lower Lazio and for five generations the Artigianstrame laboratory carries on the family tradition, the ancient profession of the straw craftsmanship.
Samuela Casale, the last descendant, today works at a nice stand set up in the historic center of Sperlonga. Here the artisan devotes herself full time to the production of straw products (ampelodesmus tenax or mauritanicus), the grass that grows spontaneously on the Aurunci mountains.
She sells useful and decorative objects that you can buy at the stand: from the famous 'scopa scaccia guai', to bags, baskets and containers for all kinds of straw toys. The Artigianstrame Laboratory also creates collections of bags and hats in collaboration with Florentine companies dealing with refining and modeling products.
Opening a school of weaving remains the dream of Samuela Casale, who in the meantime, on request, teaches how to weave to those who want to learn an ancient craft now in danger of extinction. This particular grass is been cut in the morning, before sunrise, still wet. Subsequently it is left to dry and then beaten with a rolling pin in order to weaken it.
It has been wet again to make it softer and more flexible and then ... it goes to the actual processing: it has been interwoven with the threads obtained from the operation of beating and wetting, a braid with seven garments and moving on to the creation of the products.
