Antica legatoria Viali
Antica Legatoria Viali is one of the oldest workshops in the Tuscia. Here, three generations followed until 1997, when the company founded by Giovanni was taken over by the artisans Lucia Maria Arena and Rainer Kolb Hans.
Everything started in 1891 in the heart of Viterbo and went on for 121 years, everyday repeating the same gestures, with patience, total commitment and passion. It is a real cultural treasure, which in 2011 was rightfully included in the National Register of historic companies.
The workshop is a breeding ground of ideas, of projects to develop, and new directions to follow. In addition to the normal productions, such as the binding of thesis, booklets, photo collections, as well as volumes for libraries and notary deeds, the Antica legatoria Viali stands out for the renovation of book covers and for binding parchments, leather or more in general fabrics, such as cotton, hemp, linen or synthetic. Great expertise can also be found in the engraving of leather, tables and desks, or in the production of gold leaf decorations.
Tradition and innovation are therefore key values which pave the way to the future without losing sight of the past. The equipment and the smell in the workshop are the same ancient ones, the same is true for materials: cardboard, parchments, hemp canvas, cotton and natural glues are used for contemporary productions with the expertise and intuition that only great artisans have.
Whilst the same founder’s equipment is still being used, the workshop owners have fine-tuned the techniques and searched for even better materials. The Antica Legatoria Viali produces high-quality items with premium and eco-friendly materials, works with vegetal tanned leathers from animals killed for the food industry and not for this purpose. It is a unique product which is the result of artisan passion and respect for the environment.
Each item produced in the Antica legatoria Viali shall be unique, inimitable, hand-made and certified. Exactly as it has been for 121 years.
